I saw a web site from a guy that seems to specialize in making digital pictures look like oil paintings, and it inspired me to try my hand at it:
The effect on these isn't quite as obvious, but it's there if you look closely:
You might have to click on them to view them full size for the effect to be clear, and it's possible that the re-sizing done to them automatically when I load them to Blogger may have messed up the canvas effect - won't know until I try.
I found that it works better for the web if I resize the image to 1024x768 and then apply the GIMP filters. Click on this one and you'll be able to better see the canvas grain:
This is with the grain set at '4' - I think a '2' might be more appropriately subtle:

Here's another experiment as suggested in the comments. This probably wasn't a good choice to start with, though. I couldn't crop it as tightly as I wanted to - it was taken from 6000' after all.
